Gabrielle Chanel’s manifesto was clear even during her lifetime. She designed clothes for herself by creating outfits suitable for an independent and active lifestyle. As a result, her brand came to represent everything a modern woman needed or desired in the early 20th century.
Today, even more than 50 years after her passing, that manifesto still lives on. Everything released by Chanel today, whether it’s a version of the iconic 2.55 handbag created by her in 1955, or adornments of camellias (her favourite flower) on bags and shoes and apparel, still bear the strong imprint of her style and her personality, leaving us in no doubt as to what she would be producing if she were still alive today.
