Midway through our video chat with Brett Kissel, the Canadian country star stops to sing a line from a Tim McGraw song. “Let yourself feel the pride, but always stay humble and kind,” he croons, comparing the lyrics to his own life. “I feel a lot of pride, because I always wanted a career in country music,” says the 32-yearold Alberta native. “But I never could have imagined that it would be this good, so every time I step onstage or hear my music on the radio, I do stop and soak it in.” Ten years into his hugely successful career, which has netted him three Junos, Brett maintains he’d “still be the happiest guy in the world” if it all ended tomorrow – as long as he had his loved ones by his side. “I love my career, but I could live without country music,” says the father of four, who shares daughters Mila, 7, and Aria, 5, and sons Leo, 4, and Atlas, 1, with his wife, Cecilia. “I couldn’t live without my family.”
