Lightened, lengthened and lowered, Hamamatsu's latest parallel twin get's Mossy's approval

Suzuki V-Strom 800RE

I have to admit, I had a vested interest in riding the new RE version of the V-Strom 800 at its press launch down in the South of France. Regular readers will know I'm very happily running a DE model as a long-term test bike this year, so I was keen to learn just how well it compares. The two bikes are broadly similar, but some key detailed differences with the newer V-Strom make it more suited to road use, hence its RE (Road Explorer) label. No doubt its revised spec will widen its appeal to a greater number of people. The fact that it's £1000 cheaper is likely to boost its attraction, too.

It's easy to predict the effect of some of the new components without even riding the bike, and the 30mm lower seat got a big thumbs up from me immediately. I'm not the tallest guy around, with just a 30-inch inside leg measurement; both getting on the RE and then being able to touch the ground with both feet is a major bonus.

I wouldn't say I struggle with the height of my DE's saddle, but I'm constantly aware of it, needing to check out the lie of the land every time I come to a halt to ensure a good footing. Just as welcome is the significantly bigger screen. It offers a lot more protection than the frankly near-useless off-road suited tiny piece of plastic bolted to the DE model. I may have done many long runs on my DE, but they're bound to be more sheltered, drier and warmer trips on an RE. I'll still lament that changing its height to the preferred position of three available options still requires tools, though. Come on Suzuki, you can make it easier than that.
