‘‘We Tharus are as close to the forest as the nail is to the skin on my finger,” says Krishna, and it’s not hard to see why. Just 200m from his home – a traditional Tharu cottage made of clay, roofed with reeds – begins the treeline of Banke National Park. And in the opposite direction lies Bardia National Park.
Combined, the two parks are home to over 100 tigers, making the area one of the most important tiger strongholds in the world. Add to that some 120 Asian elephants and 50 greater one-horned rhinos in Bardia alone and you’ve got one of Asia’s most prized wildlife destinations.
Tapping into this appeal are people like Krishna Choudhary, a member of the Tharu tribe indigenous to lowland Nepal. With seed funds from the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), the global conservation charity behind London and Whipsnade Zoos, Krishna and six other households (and counting) in his village have formed the Gavar Valley Community Homestay.
