TENSION prevailed at Chengalpattu on Friday as an unidentified gang had damaged a statue of Periyar the previous night.
The incident came to light when a man climbed a nearby lamp-post to repair it and noticed the arm and the face of the statue damaged.
The statue is situated near the bus stop and a lamp-post in Kaliyapettai village which is about 18 km from Chengalpattu town. “As the three-foot statue is placed on a six-foot-tall platform, nobody noticed the damage. However, when the man climbed to repair the lamppost, he noticed the damage and informed the police,” a police officer said.
