Three protesters sustained severe head injuries after they were hit by the police with lathis and walkie-talkies. The case of alleged custodial death has been handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Around midnight on Sunday, the police chased and detained the deceased, Joel Shindani Malu alias Joah, on charges of drug peddling and brought him to the JC Nagar police station. Around 2.30 am on Monday Joah collapsed, complaining of chest pain. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors tried to revive him before declaring him dead around 5 am. The cause of death was mentioned as cardiac arrest, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (North) Dharmendra Kumar Meena.
