THE chief executive of Theatre Royal Plymouth says he is leaving the company in sound financial health and it should be able to thrive in 2022 – provided there is not another Covid lockdown.
Adrian Vinken, who is stepping down in January after 31 years in the job, said theatre audiences had returned well following the lifting of restrictions.
But he said that without the support of the Government’s Cultural Recovery Fund, which had already invested £849 million nationally, TRP, along with every other regional theatre, museum and gallery in the UK, would have gone out of business.
The TRP was helped with an award of £1.9m from the £1.6bn fund in 2020, and received a further £700,000 in November. The theatre took a £10m hit in 2020, when it was forced to close during the pandemic lockdowns, but is now in a more robust position, and accounts to the end of March this year showed it had funds of £15.4m.
Mr Vinken said TRP was fortunate that it could open last Christmas, albeit with restrictions, and that audiences had remained loyal this year.
