John Higg INS delivered on his pretournament prediction to produce the first maximum break at the Crucible for eight years.
The four-time champion made his maiden World Championship 147 in the 12th frame of a battle royal with Norway’s Kurt Maflin.
It was a 10th career maximum for Higgins, the 11th at the Crucible, and made the Scot the oldest player to achieve the feat.
The previous 10 at the venue were greeted with cheering and standing ovations. This time there was only piped applause at the empty theatre as Higgins clenched his fist after potting the final black.
Grinning broadly against the backdrop of 980 empty seats, he went over to Maflin and bumped elbows, then did the same to referee Ben Williams.
