As Kate, 38, and William, 37, enjoyed the day with their three children, they remembered those who had been kept apart by the coronavirus crisis.
On their Instagram and Twitter accounts, under the moniker @KensingtonRoyal, the couple wrote: “To mothers new and old and families spending today together and apart – we are thinking of you all at this difficult time.”
They then shared four photos, including one of William’s mother Diana with him and Harry as children. Another image was a previously unseen one of Kate and Wills giving George and his sister Charlotte piggyback rides.
Disruption
A third showed Kate as a newborn in the arms of her mother, Carole Middleton. The fourth was six-year-old George’s handmade Mother’s Day card to Kate, featuring flowers made from tissue paper.
Meanwhile the Royal Family social media accounts shared a photo of the Queen, then Princess Elizabeth, and the Queen Mother holding on to their hats as they arrived at Westminster Abbey for a wedding in 1951.
The message read: “Today may be a different and difficult day for those who would usually plan to spend time with their mothers, as we adapt to the necessary changes and disruption to our normal routine and regular patterns of life.
“But for all Mums everywhere, we are thinking of you, and wish you a very special Mother’s Day.”
