For his Spring/Summer ’19 collection, Alessandro Michele paints his dreams of opulence into a timeless reality.
SINCE THE TIME Alessandro Michele took over the creative controls at Gucci, every runway presentation that has followed can be likened to sitting in at a history class. Michele has trodden the ’70s, ’80s and even the Roman empire for his collections at the Italian maison, filtering the past through his signature sense of eccentricity for the contemporary woman.
For Spring/Summer ’19, Michele uprooted his runway presentation from Milan to Paris. Staged at the iconic Le Palace theatre — once a revered nightclub, which had its heyday in the ’70s and early-’80s — the collection marked another chapter in Gucci’s history book. “Everything is a bit dusty here, a bit abandoned, but beautiful,” said Michele in an interview with Vogue. “But this place is full of life. The models could have been coming to a nightclub.”
