WHEN DIOR INAUGURATED a series of popup stores around the world to celebrate the debut of the Dior Tears capsule, a philosophical gauntlet was laid; beauty is often associated with qualities such as harmony, proportion and aesthetic pleasure. However, the concept of impermanence adds another layer to our understanding of beauty. The capsule collection is the result of a collaboration between Dior’s lead Creative Kim Jones and guest designer, Denim Tears.
Referring to the transient and ephemeral nature of all things, such impermanence adds to hype culture suggesting that everything in the world is subject to eventual disappearance. When we consider the Dior Tears capsule within this context, we can argue that impermanence plays a crucial role in enhancing its aesthetic greatness. Furthermore, when one considers that this selection of men’s creations is essentially inspired by “denim” – the term itself derived from the French Serge de Nimes, meaning “serge (a sturdy fabric) from Nimes” – the poetic connotations are enhanced to legendary levels since the fabric is no longer produced anywhere in France.
