Whipping out a phone, and snapping a couple of selfies after a workout is a priority for many sport enthusiasts these days. After all, it's the world of #fitnessgoals, #gymflow and #fitchicks, and navigating social media feeds, looking flawless even after a gruelling HIIT session, is not just desirable but almost obligatory. We find ourselves grappling with the question: Is it actually okay to wear makeup when you work out? This seemingly trivial question has sparked a heated discussion among fitness enthusiasts, beauty aficionados and health experts alike.
On one side of the spectrum, advocates argue that wearing makeup during a workout is an empowering choice. They reason that a touch of foundation or a swipe of mascara boosts self-esteem, and gives individuals confidence to face the challenges of exercise head-on.
With fitness becoming a social affair, where gym selfies and workout videos dominate social media feeds, the pressure to maintain a flawless appearance and present a unique look and style has reached new heights. In this context, makeup can be seen as an essential tool to project an image of beauty and one's dedication to fitness goals.
However, opponents of workout makeup emphasise that the primary purpose of exercise is to push physical limits, challenge the body, and embrace the rawness of the experience. Sweaty, red faces and unkempt hair are but badges of honour, signs of dedication and hard work. Moreover, the gym should be a space free from judgement and societal expectations, where individuals can focus solely on their health and well-being, unencumbered by external pressures.
