Elle Fanning was just 3 years old when she made her big-screen debut in the drama I Am Sam, long before she starred in blockbusters like Super 8 and Maleficent. Looking back, the actress can’t believe how far she’s come. “I’ve definitely grown as a person,” shares Elle, now 21, adding that her career has shifted as well. “It’s cool, because now that I’m [getting older], a whole new world of roles has opened up to me. It’s not necessarily [kids’] parts anymore — I’m [being asked to play] young women.”

She does just that in her new film, Teen Spirit, which hits theaters April 12. “It was quite an experience,” she gushes of making the pop-fueled drama, directed by Handmaid’s Tale star — and her rumored beau— Max Minghella, 33. 3. “I came into my own!” As she celebrates the movie’s release, Elle opens up about her life on and off screen.
