Almost 1000 UK and foreign registered HGVs are parking along slip-roads and laybys in Kent every night as the county struggles to provide secure sites for lorries away from the road network.
A detailed survey by Kent County Council (KCC) found an average of 875 lorries of all nationalities parking on industrial estates, laybys and exit and entry slip-roads to filling stations.
However, the council cautioned that its figure was probably underestimated by 5% because more lorries arrived throughout the night after its count took place between 9 pm and midnight in June.
Although the majority of vehicles were foreign-registered, KCC says UK hauliers make up the single largest individual group, with 44% recorded as British. This was significantly greater than the next largest group: Polish, with 12%.
