Shanoo Bhatia and Harkiran Singh (Gary) Grewal have been working together to create diverse and innovative design solutions for over two decades. Their expertise ranges from branding to furniture design and they bring to the table experience as much as moments of dazzling inspiration.
How did your design journey begin?
SB: Prior to graduating from NID (where I was pursuing a Master’s in Visual Communication), I worked as an intern with an architectural studio - Ratan J. Baltiboi Architects - because I felt that I could cultivate my multi-dimensional approach to design in an expansive cross-disciplinary environment. The internship kept me so engaged that I transited post graduation into a fulltime consultant for the company and stayed there as Head of Design for more than 10 years. I had the opportunity to direct projects that remain rare in scale and rich in design opportunity.
GG: I applied to NID on a whim. I went there for my interview and fell in love with the place. I was fortunate enough to get selected for the Master’s in Industrial Design program and majored in Furniture Design. I have since had the opportunity to work on extremely varied projects including experience centers, exhibitions, banks, auto retail, resorts, and furniture retail in India and abroad.
How did a formal design education help your career?
SB: Design education was like an epiphany. NID nourished my creative processes and stoked my anti-establishment thinking. I learned that it was okay to question aloud and debate, discuss and differ. The research and skill based education at NID provoked a thought process that allowed varied entry routes into a hunt for the best solution. The expansion of the mind and skills is a gift that design education gave me.
GG: NID had fantastic faculty who interacted and exposed all students to so many facets of design and helped one think rationally, practically and out of the box. This solid foundation gave me the confidence to start working on my own from the outset. This process of learning has helped me in all my work over the years.
