Meet Parvaaz, the strongest force on the indie music scene, now streaming on a loudspeaker near you
The first time Fidel D’Souza sensed that the college band he’d joined as a bassist was going to blow up, it was in 2012 – Parvaaz were playing an intimate set at Bak Bak Bar in Koramangala, Bengaluru, just days after dropping their first EP Behosh, a set of songs entirely in Kashmiri and Urdu. “It was a moment of serendipity – people just sang along!” he says, still incredulous.
Five years on, the Bengaluru-based prog-rock band’s built a reputation for riveting live sets. Maybe it’s the large soundscapes and riffs that sound mellow and mosh-worthy all at once. Maybe it’s the supple syllables of their Urdu poetry. Or maybe it’s the potent cocktail of Khalid Ahmed’s soaring vocals, Kashif Iqbal’s guitar-shredding chops, D’Souza’s restrained bass and Sachin Banandur’s drums. But it’s really easy to get carried away.
