I have had a huge amount of difficulty finishing this piece. I’ve written and rewritten this three to four times, deleting the entire thing a few times as well. I don’t think it has been because I have nothing to say; I have a lot to say, but I genuinely do not know how to say it without sounding insincere...
First off, I know I am very fortunate to be a man, and a man in India at that. I cannot claim to understand what women in India go through, every day at work, at college and for many, at home.
And I really want to say that I am sorry; I want to be contrite. I genuinely do not believe that I myself have done anything that can be perceived as harassment. But then again, I do know that I have been a mute spectator to if not physical harassment, then definitely misogyny and verbal abuse, although many of the women have brushed it off, as they do many other things in their lives. Personally, I believe that I have been brought up well enough to not be a nasty piece of work to any of my colleagues, being sharp but not abusive, but have I not acted when confronted with some allegations about others, either in my own organisation or in matters involving my friends? Maybe. Maybe, I told the people involved to use the proper channels to complain. Maybe I told them to ignore matters. In my haste to maintain the statusquo, I might have ignored egregious issues and problem colleagues.
