Steel Has A Bright Future
At a time when the price of steel is on an upswing, and iron and steel makers are struggling to ensure the supply of iron ore, the National Mineral Development Corporation has come forward to do its bit. The public sector enterprise has offered reopen defunct mines and strengthen the railway network with its money to transport the ore.
Celebrating its diamond jubilee this year, NMDC is all set to commission its steel plant in Jagdalpur, Chhattisgarh. It is in talks with the governments of Telangana, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand for setting up steel plants or for providing iron ore linkage. N. Baijendra Kumar, chairman and managing director of NMDC, said the company was also eyeing strategic minerals for the defence forces. Excerpts from an interview:
