As a young school-going boy, Mithu Sadarangani’s dream was simple, straightforward and ambitious. “I always wanted to be different and achieve what no one in the family had achieved.” As the Managing Director of Sahil International, one of India’s leading importers and distributors of luxury consumer electronics, he has achieved that and so much more.
Mithu speaks passionately about his work, and charts his life’s journey with such distinct detail that it only seems like yesterday that Sahil International was initiated. In 1947, only 40 days after he was born, he and his family came to India to start a new life. They brought with them their expertise in the cloth trade, but a few years later, Mithu and his siblings lost interest in the business. They laid the foundations of a new business of importing motion picture equipment to India. One thing led to another, and soon they were leaders in the field.
In the late sixties and early seventies, Mithu chipped in with the business after college hours, but always nurtured a desire to start a new venture. It was the era of the Woodstock festival, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, and The Carpenters, and music had a huge influence on Mithu. With his inputs, the company stepped into the import of high-end stereo equipment that included speakers, amplifiers, turntables and spool tape recorders from brands like Sony, Kenwood, Namakichi, Thorens, Panasonic, Ferrograph and Revox.
