The Second Innings

The name Mukesh Sahay is familiar to the people of Assam because it is more than just a name. Sahay, the former Deputy General of Police, Assam, is the epitome of willpower and hardwork. So who else could be a better fit to teach the young, building up the new strata of society, in the respectable institution of Sonaram Higher Secondary School in Guwahati’s Bharalumukh area.

The Initial Days of Struggle

In his beautiful residence just next to the DC bungalow, Mukesh Sahay looked like simplicity personified. In a faded polo t shirt, he welcomed me in. Coming a long way from the thriving state of Bihar, Sahay didn’t have an easy start. ‘I was born in a village called Chainwa in the undivided Saran district of Bihar,’ Mukesh Sahay said, ‘then my mother took us to Patna despite all hardships and difficulties. She was herself illiterate, but she was very keen that her two sons must go to school.’ On the determination and perseverance of his fearless mother, Mukesh Sahay built a life for himself and his family. Studying mostly in Patna, and completing his LLB in Delhi during his service years, his fascination with learning knew no barriers. He continued pursuing some online courses such as cyber laws, property rights, etc. He worked a lot of part time and full time jobs before dedicating himself to the police force in 1984. This started a new era in his life.

MUSINGS OF A SOLDIER: TIT-BITS

People often ask me about my life out of uniform. Honestly, I have had no problems. Not so far. Instead, I find it quite refreshing. No routine, no parades, no briefing, no impending operations. Having donned the uniform since the age of thirteen until I hung up my boots last year, could I ever visualize life out of uniform? Not really. But, as I said, the transition has been quite smooth–no hang-overs, no regrets. People have been very positive in their interactions. Government departments have been responsive whenever I have approached for assistance. The genuine respect for the uniform is quite evident and it makes my heart swell with pride. Arunachal, to that extent, is the most nationalistic state in the country, I daresay. It has been kind of a revelation for me to experience the freedom of being a common man in an environment of positivity!
