Prof (Dr) L Sreenivasa Murthy discusses the key factors that affect heart health and how to better manage them.
Due to our busy schedule, we tend to ignore the important symptoms that our body gives us throughout the day. This leads to an increased risk of suffering from heart disease. According to a recent study published in The Lancet, heart disease is one of the major causes of deaths in India. The death rate has drastically increased from 1.3 million to 2.8 million since 1990 due to heart disease. Research studies have shown that more than half of the deaths by heart disease in India occur in people below the age of 70. More children and adults are being diagnosed with some form of heart ailment due to hypertension, unhealthy diet, high cholesterol level, air pollution, Diabetes and obesity.
To keep a balance between health and work, people have started adopting new technologies to keep a track of their heart. This begins from a simple counting of steps to keeping track over the calories burned during an activity.
Below are some of the factors that influence heart health:
Diabetes
A person with Diabetes has a greater risk of developing heart disease. Yet again, diet and physical activity can help reduce the risk of developing the condition. This is particularly true if you are at a high risk of Diabetes owing to genetic factors. If you do have Diabetes, keeping yourself physically active such as swimming and brisk walking can help in protecting your heart. In people with Diabetes, exercising improves glucose absorption in the blood and improves blood sugar control, which reduces the negative impact on the heart.
