As our over-heated Summer slips by into a hopefully cooling down Autumn (El Nino permitting, I must add), we enter a period that traditionally has become known in fishing folklore as the “big fish” months. 
Why this is so should not be problematical to understand, even though conventional fishing wisdom has it that during periods of changing weather patterns fishing can be not good at all as fish adapt to different day and night temperatures and periods of sunshine. But in practice Autumn has delivered many PB’s to a great many anglers. After all, as fishery biologists will tell you, the bigger fish hive off into the deep where temperatures tend to be more stable than in the shallows where there are significant differences between day and night temperatures. This is a truism for just about all freshwater species. So it happens that the small fish become less active while the big ones must maintain their food intake.


Our third issue not only celebrates the dawning of a new year, it also  - and regrettably - accompanies the entry of an El Nino weather pattern. Not that it should bother any self-respecting specimen angler too much, but its vagaries do need some attention, such as its prospensity of delivering crazy weather patterns, such as storms of gigantic proportions ,hail stones as big as tennis balls, rain deluges at places where the locals are stunned if any more than a few millimetres of rain falls. Does it affect the fish at all? Could be, but mostly in their habitat. For example if a smallish lake is flooded to such an extent that it bursts its banks, or conversely, receives hardly rain at all and its water level drops several metres. In both cases the fish’s patrol routes could change, previously hot spots harbour no fish and strategic, fish-holding structures and cover are no longer available..  Otherwise it should just be a matter of making very sure your bankside possie is more secure than usual and keeping an escape route open.

This is summer and our second issue of The Carp Angler is in your hands – welcome!  During November and December the days are sometimes sun-drenched, sometimes rain-washed, but always warm with maybe just a gentle breeze – these are the typical days of summer, with long hours between sunrise and sunset. It is a time to be on the bank, rods resting in their pods and the bite alarms set to send their shrill tunes into the quiet.
This issue, as we seemingly rush through November into December’s vacation pandemonium, is designed to not only educate but also to entertain (in publishing circles known as “edutainment”). The end product will, we hope and trust, provide readers with sufficient inspiration to go out there with renewed vigour – and confidence – to land what must be the best present of all, namely a new PB!
