The cover story is on Icertis, a contract management software provider to the world’s biggest companies. India added 26 new members to the billionaires club, taking the total number to a record-breaking 166. It is now the third country in the world after the US and China with the most number of billionaires. This edition is about the 2022 Forbes World’s Billionaires List, and gives startling numbers about the wealthiest people across the globe. Ravi Modi of Vedant Fashions Limited, for instance, built a billion-dollar empire by changing the way India dresses and now wants to dominate the celebrations’ space. Then there’s Indian-American Romesh Wadhwani of SymphonyAI who wants to give away 80 percent of his wealth. The issue features the incredible journeys of some of the most successful people on this planet.

As digital transformation became a buzzword during the ‘new normal’, several direct-to-consumer (D2C) brands hit the fast lane. In this edition, we feature 10 such digital-first companies that are eyeing the path to profitability. These include a hearables and wearables player that is making noise, a beauty and personal care marketplace, a clean beauty label and an ultra-thin premium baby diaper brand, among others. These D2C companies not only have a differentiated product and have clocked furious growth, but also have a firm eye on the bottom line. There’s also a robust coverage of the Forbes India Leadership Awards in the issue.

The cover story in this issue is about Francisco D’Souza who has floated a private equity fund to identify tomorrow’s winners in IT services. Recognize’s plan is to back the next generation of tech services companies early in the game and get in with operational control. Typically, Recognize will cut cheques ranging from $50 million to $250 million, with scope for follow-on investments as well. Apart from that, this edition is an Investment Special. The latest edition is the annual Forbes India 30 Under 30 list. In a year when Covid-related challenges exacerbated the situation for businesses, these are tales of grit, gumption, determination and surviving against all odds. Among those featured include two IIT roommates who are helping dairy farmers with their unusual venture, an individual whose startup has recently turned unicorn, a rising badminton star, a hockey player who is among the Padma winners this year, and a few who are disrupting the payments industry in India.

The cover story is on Zomato and Blinkit’s bet on quick commerce. Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal says the platform is at the confluence of food and hyperlocal ecommerce. Blinkit (formerly Grofers)—in which Zomato is a minority investor—has opened over 330 operational dark stores across eight cities and plans to hit 500 by January-end. Hyperlocal commerce, Goyal reckons, is very close to what Zomato is as a business. This edition is also the Budget Special in which we look at what will it take to close FY23 with 8 percent growth, what can be done to generate employment, why social sector schemes need greater allocations and whether the government can meet its FY22 fiscal deficit target.

This issue of Forbes India is the New Year Special. Twenty-two essays by experts from various fields give insights into what to expect from crucial sectors in 2022. From economic growth and jobs to education and health care, the columnists talk about the multiple opportunities and challenges during a pandemic. For instance, GVS Murthy writes that a dedicated workforce skilled in public health is needed at all levels. And Girish Mathrubootham of Freshworks talks about India as a tech product nation. Our latest issue is about the Roaring 50s—those who turned founders late in their careers and found success in their 50s. For all of them, their age turned out to be an advantage, not a liability. Among those featured is Falguni Nayar, whose Nykaa was oversubscribed nearly 82.5 times. The IIM-Ahmedabad graduate started the beauty and fashion ecommerce platform at 49. It saw a blockbuster listing in November. Others profiled in this edition include Kamesh Goyal, who started insuretech startup Digit when he was 50; the venture is now valued at $3.5 billion. There’s also a profile of Hemant Jalan of Indigo Paints.

Our latest edition features women achievers from diverse fields—business, sport, entertainment, science, social impact. The Forbes India W-Power list highlights successful stories that will inspire others and gives a glimpse into the challenges they have overcome to reach the top. The list is by no means exhaustive, but there’s a lot in common among them: An insatiable hunger, a strong work ethic, the ability to persist, their integrity and humble demeanour. Some of the people we have profiled include hockey captain Rani Rampal, ASHA workers, Lizzie Chapman, co-founder and CEO of ZestMoney, and Dr Priya Abraham, director of the National Institute of Virology in Pune, among others. 

The latest issue of Forbes India is on the electric vehicle (EV) revolution in the country. While it is still work-in-progress, Bengaluru is fuelling that industry with a bunch of startups making heady progress in the sector. That apart, there are a number of two-wheeler companies banking on the EV bandwagon. The cover story is on Tata Motors that is now striving to become an EV major to reckon with. It will invest $2 billion over four years to launch 10 new EVs. A subsidiary being set up by the company recently became India’s most valuable electric vehicle company, after raising $1 billion from a private equity major.   

The 2021 Forbes India Rich List gives insights into the businesses of the wealthiest people in the country. India’s 100 richest added over $325 billion to their cumulative wealth in the second year of the pandemic. More than 80 percent of the listees saw their wealth increase in the last year, with 61 adding $1 billion or more. The edition features the journeys of Ashok Boob, managing director of Clean Science and Technology; Inder Jaisinghani, chairman and managing director, Polycab India, who makes his debut on the list; Arvind Lal, who is at the forefront of a healthtech revolution with Dr Lal PathLabs, and billionaire investor Rakesh Jhunjhunwala.  

The cover story in this edition—Innovation Nation—is on Infra.Market, a five-year-old startup that is poised for a giant leap. The B2B online infra procurement platform is making an audacious bid to disrupt the fossilised real estate and constructions industry. Valued at $2.5 billion, the company has been profitable since its first year. Its co-founders are now deepening its horizontal play and want to build it into a $10 billion global conglomerate. That apart, there are stories on Byju’s Innovation Lab and a wearable device with exoskeletal gloves that ensure sensation in a paralysed hand.

In our latest issue, South Celebrity Special, we look at the four industries down South—Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada—and some reigning and emerging superstars there. The three-cover special has profiles of actors Nayanthara, Dulquer Salmaan and Yash, as well as an interview with Mahesh Babu. That apart, there are columns on how a culture of creativity allows southern stars to take risks and why the OTT boom is proving to be a boon for actors and filmmakers there. This fortnight’s cover story ‘SaaS Appeal’ traces the ambitions of Trichy-born 46-year-old Girish Mathrubootham and the roadmap for the next stage of growth for his venture Freshworks, a software products maker. In the wake of the company’s listing on the Nasdaq, Mathrubootham is convinced that Software as a Service (SaaS) is a trillion-dollar opportunity in India. The special package in the edition tracks the luxury sector, right from the increasing popularity of ‘quarantourism’ and exquisite residential workspaces to the state of luxury retail and how the band baaja baarat-loving Indian wedding remains big even as celebrations scale down due to the pandemic.

The cover story in this issue is on TCS putting a value to resilience and participating in its biggest clients’ most complex problems. The combination of automation, machine-first approach and the irreversible shift towards cloud computing became the foundation of the new TCS. There is also greater awareness of the value of what the company has achieved, the value of the solutions that it delivers and the value of the outcome. Under CEO Rajesh Gopinathan’s watch, TCS has been investing more in marketing and intentionally shaping its brand. The cover story in this issue is on entrepreneur-turned-investor Sanjeev Bikhchandani who has built a reputation of being someone who paved the way for internet startups to come into their own. His Info Edge became one of the first internet ventures to be listed on the BSE and NSE. "The IPO was a dream, but a distant dream," he says as he looks back at his 30-year journey. The cover story in this issue is about SoftBank’s game plan for India. After setting up a team in the country, the Japanese tech conglomerate has made investments across social commerce, food delivery, software as a service, fintech and edtech, with cheque sizes ranging from $75 million to $450 million. That apart, this edition is also an Artificial Intelligence Special. We explain how it can help some of the largest and most complex financing problems in the world, and also highlight the dangers and biases associated with it. 

The cover story in this issue is on Reliance Industries’ ambitious roadmap towards renewable energy. The conglomerate will invest Rs75,000 crore in the solar and hydrogen fuel sectors as part of its green gambit. It wants to become a net carbon-zero business by 2035. Reliance Industries—owner of Network 18, the publisher of Forbes India—plans to invest in both manufacturing as well as partnerships in the solar and hydrogen fuel economies. This edition is also a Healthtech Special with stories on femtech startups, long Covid and innovations in Covid treatment, among others. 

The cover story in this issue is on how Tata Steel’s lost decade may well be behind it. The company’s business has a veritable spring in its step and a lot has to do with steel prices that are touching new highs. They give it the cash flows to plan expansions, pare down debt and return money to its parent and shareholders. That apart, this edition is also a Sports Special. There are stories on India’s medal hopes, increasing number of athletes dealing with mental health issues, and why there are fewer women coaches compared to men, among others.

The Real Estate Special has stories from an industry that has been transformed by the pandemic. The cover story is on Brookfield Asset Management that set up its India office in 2009, but has been bullish about the country since 2014. To date, it has deployed about $20 billion of which nearly $11.5 billion was pumped in the pandemic year. That apart, there are stories on co-working spaces, commercial real estate and data centres. Forbes India also keeps its focus on Covid-19 vaccines with a report on how the inoculation drive needs to relook pace, price and access issues.

The current edition features non-urban startups that have innovated to be in a position to alleviate the stress on the health care system brought about by the second wave of the coronavirus pandemic. The cover story, though, is on India’s latest unicorn, Moglix, which gets nearly 65 percent of its business from Tier II and III towns by helping over 500,000 small-and-medium-sized businesses procure industrial goods. It’s raised $220 million in funding so far. The report is a deep-dive into how CEO and founder Rahul Garg got third-time lucky and built an unexpected billion-dollar business that claims to be the largest ecommerce platform for industrial goods.   

The cover story in this edition is about Sputnik, the third vaccine to get the go-ahead from the Drug Controller of India for emergency use. At least five Indian pharma firms are on track to manufacture 852 million doses of the controversial Russian vaccine. The Hetero Group, for instance, has committed to manufacture 100 million doses. However, concerns around the effectiveness of Sputnik V and the single-dose Sputnik Light remain a cause of worry. Having said that, it is only expected to add to India’s vaccine armoury. That apart, this issue is also a ‘Sustainability Special’ and has stories on efforts across industries to make the planet greener.  

As India finds itself in the middle of the second wave of the coronavirus, Forbes India looks at the lessons from the devastating pandemic for the country and its citizens. The latest edition—the 12th Anniversary Special—has essays from subject experts—CEOs, startup founders, economists, philanthropists and health care professionals, among others—on what the future entails in their respective fields. Jeff Bezos tops the list while Elon Musk climbs to the second spot. Only the US and China have more billionaires than India. Our cover story is on banking’s newest billionaire, Sanjay Agarwal, who debuts on the list with a net worth of $1.3 billion. His AU Small Finance Bank has seen its loan assets and revenue increase exponentially since 2017. He now wants the bank to be counted among its larger peers. There are also stories on India’s unicorn party and whether foreign vaccines can help the country fight the second wave of the coronavirus.
