The spread of the coronavirus to more countries is taking a heavy toll on the gem and jewellery industry in this fiscal. The impact is growing not only in China, but also US, Europe, Hong Kong and India. The virus has indeed grown to pandemic portions, as several expos, trade fairs and exhibitions have been postponed and cancelled. The World Health Organization (WHO) has described the new coronavirus as a pandemic, with more than 126,000 people infected globally. Overall, gem and jewellery exports are expected to fall 20 to 30% from the previous fiscal’s 2.77-lakh crore ($39.68 billion).

Nirupa Bhatt announced her transition from her full-time position as managing director of GIA India Laboratory Pvt. Ltd. (“GIA India”), effective June 15. In her role as managing director, Bhatt oversaw the successful 10-year expansion of GIA India. She will continue as consulting and advisory role in the organisation.
