The cover of our May magazine features a photograph of the ordination to the deaconate of Brother Kellen Scott, OP at St Saviours in Dublin. This image and the photo on page 1, which also celebrates Brother Anthony Kavanagh’ s special day was taken by Brother Sean Blackwell, OP. May is of course Mary’s special month and in a lovely article Fr Colm Mannion OP looks at how it is through Mary that we become true disciples of Christ. ‘Holding on to her we are safe”. Fr Aelred MacGee, OCSO continues the theme in a piece about St Barnard of Clairvaux who is known as Mary’s harpist. Fr Aelred is a member of the order of Cistercians of the Strictest Observance, based in Our Lady of Bethlem Abbey in Portglenone, Co Antrim. In our new series on the Bible, Evangelium (which replaces Lectio), Brother Kellen Scott OP, draws parallels between the message of Our Lady of Fatima and the Presentation in the Temple. It Happened this Month looks at the boyhood of Pope John Paul II who having lost his mother at a young age developed a deep devotion to Our Lady. This month’s famous convert is Adrienne von Speyr, admired by both Pope John Paul II and Pope Emeritus Benedict.
