The possibility of having a regional platform for the power trade among the four nations – Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Bhutan -- is taking shape as officials of Bangladesh and India are meeting this month to discuss the issue. The four-nation virtual power grid would be developed based on the India-Bangladesh-India cross-country grid and it would be a big leap forward ultimately in establishing a dream SAARC grid. The issue was raised at the SAARC forum on different occasions, but India always insisted about bilateral negotiations on cross-border power trade. The donor-driven initiatives for last two decades did not see success, as a result. But India with having huge energy demand did not remain seated idle -- they started power trade with Nepal and Bhutan. Bangladesh is now importing power from India and planning to import more in future. Experts say power import from neighboring countries would play a significant role in Bangladesh’s future energy mix. The government is considering all the prospects for energy import. Bangladesh must protect its interest in the negotiations before starting work on cross-border power trade. It is expected that the government would do the negotiations skillfully.

Bangladesh is an energy deficit country like other countries in the region and most of the people do not have adequate access to the energy and power. The country is completely dependent on fossil energy source; at the same time, it is one of the most inefficient energy using countries in the world.

It lacks efficiency in planning, management, generation, distribution, load management and even at the end user level consumption.

In spite of the above drawbacks, issues relating to utilization of renewable energy, exploring alternative use of energy, planned use of environment friendly energy are significantly undermined in Bangladesh.

The biggest challenge of Bangladesh is to find a path for balanced growth of its energy sector. Despite its resource constraints, EP dynamically strives to provide theenergy sector with a flow of information and create public awareness; so that policymakers get guidelines and platforms for its sustainable development.
