<p>The Amal spacecraft flew within 100 kms of Deimos in March, the closest a spacecraft has been to this moon in almost half a century. NASA&rsquo;s Viking 2 came within 30 kms of Deimos in 1977. Since then, other spacecrafts have photographed Deimos but from much farther away.</p>
<p>Deimos is tidally locked with Mars, meaning the same side always faces the planet, so probes near Mars see only one side of the small moon, until Amal observed the little-explored far side of the odd-shaped, cratered moon, measuring just 15 kms by 12 kms by 12 kms. Mars&rsquo; other moon, Phobos, is almost double this size and better understood since it orbits much closer to Mars &mdash; 6,000 kms away, the closest of any planet&rsquo;s moon in our solar system.</p>
<p>UAE Space Agency scientists say that these images indicate Deimos is not an asteroid captured in Mars&rsquo; orbit eons ago, the leading theory until now. Instead, it appears to be of Martian origin, perhaps from Phobos or from Mars itself.</p>
<p>Also known as the Emirates Mars Mission (EMM), Amal (Arabic for &lsquo;hope&rsquo;) arrived at Mars in early 2021 and is the first interplanetary spacecraft from an Arab nation.</p>
