After years of being bombarded by judgments about our appearance from the media and culture at large, it's time to turn the page, says expert Kimberly Dark. "Questions we ask ourselves, like, 'Why can't I lose weight?' are unfair and unhelpful. The better question is, 'Where is there pleasure in my body?'" Dark says we feel physical joy in so many ways, from the cool breeze on our skin to being satiated after a good meal. "Savoring physical happiness helps you shift focus away from your body's appearance to the experience of it."

Spark compassion

Treating ourselves more kindly starts with seeing others with greater compassion, says Dark. Looking for things you appreciate about people, from their sense of style to their kindness, will help you turn that gentle gaze back toward yourself.
