Glancing down in the shower, Charlotte Robinson sighed sadly as she watched more hair go down the drain. For months, her thick, lush hair had been thinning inexplicably. She was also gaining weight, despite no change in her diet or daily exercise. What’s wrong? she wondered.
At age 46, Charlotte was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, meaning her thyroid gland wasn’t producing enough hormones. In addition, her thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) levels were higher than 5.0 mU/L, another indicator of an underactive thyroid, which, her doctor explained, can cause thinning hair, weight gain, brittle nails, constipation, and fatigue. He prescribed medication, but Charlotte hated the thought of having to be on meds for the rest of her life. There has to be something else I can do, she hoped.
