Denise Green glimpsed herself in the mirror and sighed. Yep, I'm in the same outfit again, thought the Pennsylvania grandmother. As a size 5X, she had so much trouble finding clothes that fit, she wore the same shapeless black jumper and white tee again and again. It was her "uniform," and she had it on in Facebook posts, family snapshots, even her driver's license and work ID photos. "I'm sick of this," she muttered. Of course, it wasn't about becoming a fashion plate. She was now so big, the smallest tasks felt hard-and she had zero energy left for fun. I don't want this to be the rest of my life.
After that day, every time Denise put on the jumper, a voice in her head would say: You have to do something. She still indulged her constant urges for fast food, pizza and sweets, yet she found her mind drifting to Weight Watchers. She'd used the plan after her son Adam was born; she'd even briefly helped run meetings. Then life got busy and her good habits had slipped. Can I relearn them? she wondered.
A new beginning
"I might try Weight Watchers again," Denise blurted out to her daughter Meghan. "That's great, Mom! Let's go together," Meghan said. Denise nodded.
At their first "WW" meeting, Denise weighed in at 311 pounds, yet she felt... relief. I'm finally doing something, she told herself. She and Meghan found seats and a leader named Steve got things got underway. It's not so different from last time, Denise noted. I bet I can do this.
