One of the pioneers of adventurous eco-tourism, Costa Rica has wildliferich national parks, tropical beaches and sun-kissed coastlines. It's a slender country, so in one trip you can combine blissful beach days with volcanoes and rainforests, spotting slumbering sloths and myriad species of monkeys as you explore the lush greenery.

Blue Zone

On the Pacific side, Santa Teresa on the Nicoya Peninsula is an up-and-coming surf and yoga destination known for its safe surfing for all levels - it's particularly good for learners. A bonus is the warm ocean, which means you don't need to wear a wetsuit. It's also one of the world's five Blue Zone areas, where locals live longer than average, thanks to a winning combination of protein-rich diets, spending time in nature, sunlight and physical exercise. There's a free spirit and healthy-living feel, with artisan bakeries, sodas - small family-run restaurants - and boutiques selling yoga clothing, handmade candles and beautiful jewellery.
