Apropos the short story, Mother's Advice, by Arathi Sivaprasad in WESept 2023. Hats off to the writer for narrating a story beautifully from start to finish. The story revolves around the brilliant advice given by the mother to her daughter after sensing the daughter's sudden fear of being sidelined in the school over a role to be portrayed in a drama going to another girl by merely imagining events that do not exist. The mother quoted her example of having undergone more or less a similar during situation her school days by imagining she was the best in Maths until another girl coming up with a brilliant performance proved herself the class best and had shaken her nerves. She felt for a moment it was a disgrace to fail. But the teacher, seeing her student's predicament, proved her wrong by pointing at her mistakes in the answer sheet and then comparing the perfect way the other girl answered to score full marks. Hearing the advice tendered by the teacher, she realised her folly. Summing up the advice of the teacher "not to lose confidence in yourself because it is with confidence, that you have won so far". Hence, continue to cultivate a 'Can do better' attitude, even with one failure because this will only give strength to give the best at all times. All in all one should "continue efforts in humility" because this will only push you to the edge to perform without fear the best always. The moral of the story is "Build up the passion to perform the task at hand with interest and results will follow one's way sooner or later instead of brooding and comparing with others." EMOTIONAL EXHAUSTION&nbsp;
Referring to the article, Are You&nbsp;An Emotional Sponge? by Santosh Pattanaik, October 2023, an emotional sponge is a person who, being and empathetic sensitive towards others' pain, unknowingly&nbsp;absorbs others' negative emotions which subsequently lead to his/her suffering.
We have often observed that in our endeavour to destress someone from the emotional hurt, we too feel emotionally drained, our mood turns from happy to gloomy as we deeply feel the pain of that person by putting ourselves in that situation and the emotions of hurt too enter our mind. While in a toxic relationship, the insensitive person always plays a victim before the sensitive one and makes the caring person feel guilty and the caring person starts assuming that to keep that narcissist is his or her sole responsibility. Unable to cope with so much emotional responsibility the person finally gets emotionally exhausted and thus, transmitted negative emotions play havoc with the sensitive person's mental health.
Be empathetic, and intently listen to others' problems but set limitations for your generosity to avoid being an emotional sponge, leaving the affected persons to handle their own emotions in their way. Concentrate on self-care as it is your own body that is going to live with you till the last breath of life. Learn to say no, mix up with positive-minded people, listen to music or absorb yourself in&nbsp;some constructive activity to lead a meaningful life. If the emotionally draining person is unavoidable, set boundaries for your empathetic help but stay away from the avoidable person to ensure your mental peace.&nbsp;-Harinder Kaur
