Keep that HOLIDAY FEELING

You can’t beat a summer break – no hectic schedules, no groaning to-do lists, just R&R and a dose of healing sunshine. It’s no wonder we feel our best on holiday. But what if you don’t have a trip away on the horizon? Or maybe you’ve just got back and are struggling with the post-holiday blues? Don’t worry, you can still enjoy a well-being boost when staying at home. Get ready to check into your happy, healthy place – no passport required!

Ditch the car

Chances are you walk more or hire a bike on holiday. So get out of the habit of using the car for short journeys when back in your usual routine. Walking for 20 minutes a day reduces the risk of heart disease by 30%, according to a Harvard University study. What’s more, simply standing up for three hours a day is as beneficial for your health as running 10 marathons a year, says Dr Mike Loosemore at the Institute of Sport, Exercise & Health.

Take an afternoon nap

A siesta quickly becomes part of the daily routine when you’re by the pool, but we forget about the benefits at home. Why are they good for us? A snooze feels refreshing and restorative. Plus, it’s proven that a nap after lunch can reduce mental stress and improve focus. Shut your eyes for a maximum of 30 minutes to avoid entering a deep sleep. NASA scientists found that 26 minutes was the optimum nap time for improved alertness when waking.
