She epitomises the saying, Keep calm and carry on. But the usually stoic Queen looked to be overcome by emotion as thousands of people cheered her during her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
Her Majesty only made two appearances in public during the four-day event due to her mobility issues, and at the second one, on the balcony at Buckingham Palace, she seemed to be holding back the tears as the crowds in the streets below sang a spine-tingling version of God Save the Queen.
Body language expert Judi James says signs that the Queen, 96, was struggling not to cry included her eyes narrowing and her lips being "sucked in" as she used "all of her willpower to avoid breaking down in public".
