TAGORE the globetrotter
Travellers' World|August - September 2022
Yes, I am a traveller, Nothing can hold me back, False are the bindings of pleasure and pain, The homely ties are left far behind.
Arunabha Dasgupta
TAGORE the globetrotter

Perhaps one of the most travelled men in his era Rabindranath Tagore, the literary genius's life itself is a story of a journey. Apart from all his legendary works in the Bengali world of art, if someone simply attempts to follow and describe his journey throughout India and the world, that would be no less than a novel in itself. Prof Arunabha Dasgupta shares a glimpse of his life as a traveller of the world.

Bengali polymath Rabindranath Tagore was a versatile genius who excelled as a poet, lyricist, playwright, composer, philosopher, social reformer and what's not.

W. B Yets an Irish poet renowned for his association with Tagore esteemed his works as "an achievement unequalled in the English language". In 1913 Rabindranath was awarded the Nobel prize "because of his profoundly sensitive, fresh and beautiful words by which he made his poetic thought...". He was the first non-European to win a Nobel prize in literature and the second non-European to receive a Nobel prize after Theodore Roosevelt. It is worthy to mention that he renounced the title of knighthood in protest against the Jallianwala massacre in 1919.
