COME APRIL-MAY, WhatsApp groups get flooded with requests for restaurant recommendations for everywhere from exotic locales to perennial favourites. One city that always gets the most requests is the evergreen vacation darling—New York City. And in New York City most tourists usually go for Manhattan, though Brooklyn has clearly made its mark when it comes to dining out. But is it really possible to get your hands on that one definitive list in a city that seems to make a pastime out of eating and drinking?
A lot of where you end up dining depends on the neighbourhood you’re staying in or how far you’re willing to travel for a great meal. Breakfast is something you probably don’t want to make a trek out of but rather roll out of bed and into your quintessential New York everything bagel. Our local was Liberty Bagels (libertybagels.com), the sandwich version of a gelato parlour, with over 20 fillings piled up in tubs like ice cream. Ordering is more like a Starbucks experience—pick the type of bagel, choose the filling, and let them know whether you’d like it toasted.
