Were it not for a barely noticeable street sign on Peach Tree Road, you’d have no idea Megalong even existed. And maybe that’s the point. Getting lost en route to this off-grid destination diner – which opened in mid-April – is half the fun.
You’ll likely lose reception as you dip from Blackheath through tree ferns and towering eucalypts down into the secluded patch of primordial beauty that is the Megalong Valley. Only when you spot a cluster of luxury cars parked outside a handsomely restored homestead will you know you’ve arrived.
What you’re in for is a high-minded meal, overseen by chef and co-owner Colin Barker, who many will remember from his 13-year tenure at The Boathouse on Blackwattle Bay in Sydney. Here, his $185 five-course menu centres almost exclusively on organic ingredients grown and reared on the surrounding 600-hectare property, known as Lot 101.
