<p><strong>IN A SEA </strong>of smart speakers, Audio Pro&rsquo;s C5 MkII leans very much on the &ldquo;speaker&rdquo; side of things. Although it has some software control it does not feature a microphone or any kind of digital assistant, so it&rsquo;s really nothing like a HomePod, for example. Compact but very well built, the C5 MkII is designed to be somewhat portable with its leather carrying handle, though it needs to run off wall power so is really meant only for indoor use. Around the back you&rsquo;ll find a bass port as well as RCA inputs and a subwoofer output should you wish to connect a turntable or some bass extension, respectively.</p>
<p>In addition to the physical inputs the speaker has Bluetooth 4.2 and of course Wi&ndash;Fi, supporting AirPlay 2, Google Cast and multiroom operation. There&rsquo;s a companion app you can use to get set up, though in our case it failed repeatedly to complete the process. Luckily you can also use Apple Home or Google Home to connect it to your Wi&ndash;Fi and after we did this, Audio Pro&rsquo;s Connect app did then seem to recognize the speaker.</p>

<p>As noted there&rsquo;s no assistant running on the speaker, so everything is done via your smartphone where you can set up shortcuts to a range of streaming services, and up to six of these can be assigned to the shortcut buttons. There&rsquo;s also transport controls, volume, and input select buttons here. The app allows you control of basic EQ as well as managing multiple speakers, and Spotify and Tidal Connect are supported.</p>
<p>The front&ndash;firing 4&ndash;inch woofer is powered by a 25W amp and the two tweeters have 8W each. Frequency response is 50Hz &ndash; 20kHz, which means there isn&rsquo;t a huge amount of bass at the lowest end. That aside the soundstage is fairly punchy, doing a decent job with a mixture of genres and sounding warm and clear. The app definitely needs a revamp, and competition is fierce, with the Sonos Era 100 offering a lot more software features for $50 less than this speaker retails for.&nbsp;</p>
