Breitenreiter won the Swiss Super League title with FC Zurich in 2021-22.
He also led two clubs in his homeland, Paderborn and Hannover, to promotion to the Bundesliga.
He is known for his attacking style and that is something the Terriers' American owner Kevin Nagle was keen on after the more cautious reign of previous boss Darren.
Moore, who only spent four months in charge after replacing Neil Warnock.
