Rajasthan Royals need to perform increasingly well in the upcoming 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Last season, they reached the playoffs but can they do a similar job this season? The Royals retained the joint-most players ahead of the mega auction alongside Kolkata Knight Riders (6). However, surprisingly the Royals let go of several star names and didn't get them back by signing them at the auction. Not keeping Yuzvendra Chahal was a big miss.
This season, RR have more challenges than strengths. They are a side reliant on a settled XI with poor recruitment at large. It remains to be seen how they prove critics wrong and deliver.
Ahead of IPL 2025, we present 5 reasons why RR could miss a playoff berth this season alongside their strengths and weaknesses.
OVER DEPENDENCE ON ARCHER, SANDEEP AND DESHPANDE
RR are over reliant on their three main pacers in Jofra Archer, Sandeep Sharma and Tushar Deshpande. For RR to click, all of the three pacers need to have an excellent and consistent season. This is largely because of the dearth in Indian pace attack on the bench when it comes to quality.
Yudhvir Singh, Ashok Sharma and Akash Madhwal are uncapped pacers in the mix. Yudhvir has limited experience in T20s and averages 33-plus. He played two games for LSG last season, bowling 4 overs in total, averaging 52 and his economy rate being 13. 22-year-old Ashok is yet to make his debut in domestic cricket. He might not get any game. Madhwal took just five scalps from five matches in IPL 2024 for Mumbai Indians at 41. His economy rate was poor (11-plus).
