CAT ALLEN

LONDON, UK

Cat Allen is a real life superwoman and exactly the kind of person you would expect to crank out thousands of kilometres on Zwift every month.

She is a 50-year-old solo parent and a senior consultant for a global pensions and investment company which she’s worked at for 23 years. Allen first started using Zwift in 2018 and was hooked immediately.

When we ask her what drives her to log so many miles on Zwift, Allen says, “Zwift is a safe, fun way for me to exercise and be at home and I can still chat to my daughter and jump off in a second if I am needed. When speaking to Cat, one gets the impression that she is someone who would exercise a lot anyway, having been a runner before discovering Zwift.

“Also a little part of me is scared to ride outside as all I hear is horror stories of cycling accidents. As the only parent to my daughter I don’t want to put myself at risk anymore than I need to, she has already had so much loss in her life.

“Zwift is fun and I love that once I start riding each day it’s not long before someone I know says hello. The Zwift community is amazing.” Allen is inspired to ride on Zwift for a number of reasons, one of which is the simple, but relatable, feeling of accomplishment from setting and achieving goals.

She said: “I have goals to ride daily and to get to certain milestones. I am currently aiming to reach 200,000km on Zwift in early November and also hit level-60 in a couple of weeks. After that I will set another goal.” The relentless chasing of goals is a recurring theme in Cat’s life, Zwift is no different.

Is pro racing getting more dangerous?

There are many factors that contribute to the perceived greater risks. One that does not get any attention is the greater importance of UCI points and the need to constantly collect them to avoid relegation.

It's the most brutal race of the year - 29.2km of the worst cobbles northern France has to offer, over 17 agonising sectors, starting in Denain and finishing in the iconic Roubaix velodrome. For the men, it's referred to as a Sunday in Hell, but for us, hell comes a day early.
