Running ahead of his father, Gadai raced down the steps of Haldarpukur and joyfully greeted some men bathing in the tank. When the bathers caught sight of Kshudhiram, they quickly stepped out. "We'll wait for you to finish, sir," they told the brahmin respectfully. Gadai entered the tank with his father and followed his example of offering prayers to the rising sun. Kshudhiram's bare chest flushed red with emotion and as he recited mantras, tears flowed from his eyes. The men watched in awe and said to one another, "He's like the sages of ancient times. We're fortunate to have his guidance."
Overhearing them, Gadai decided that one day soon he would paint a picture of a sage.
