OPPORTUNITIES IN DEFENCE

The world has witnessed extremely challenging times during the past two years plus, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. While India has almost recovered completely, the large part of the world is still reeling under its adverse impact in terms of physiological, psychological and economic factors. This black swan event has led to nations losing trillions of dollars’ worth of goods and services, and it would take a long time for the world to recover from this impact. Thanks to the very well thought out strategy to develop our own vaccine coupled with timeliest and well managed initiative to create required infrastructure, provisioning of massive medical aid and pharma subsidies, India has emerged as the lone bright spot in this globally gloomy scenario. The significant development in the ongoing more than a year-long RussianUkraine conflict, which has led to the major disruption to the energy sector, the scarce availability of agricultural produce and fertilizers leading to major disruptions in the supply chain globally has resulted into unprecedented industrial and economic recession even in the developed world. These two events are just the examples that highlights the significance of having faith in our own capabilities and the imperative for the nations to be Atmanirbhar or self-reliant.

THE LOOMING NUCLEAR DANGER!

The world is now without any armscontrol agreement with regard to nuclear weapons. The new START treaty, whose duration was extended up to 2026 by the two superpowers- USA and Russia, who between them have 90 percent of the world’s nuclear weapons, is now under suspension. Moscow has walked out of it because of what it says is the American-led war in Ukraine against Russia’s very survival.

The New Asian America

It wasn't always this way. We were not so often the headline. Our elders' safety was not a cause célèbre. We weren't even sure that we were a "we"-can so many people with so little in common say that? Still, there were a few shared things. Cooking ingredients, tropes we were sick of. And when the attacks first started in early 2020, we found we shared another: a terrible feeling of dread.
