There is a need for balancing innovation with cybersecurity resilience
India's economy, governance, and society have all benefited significantly from its accelerated digital transformation. Nevertheless, it has also exposed the nation to substantial cybersecurity threats. The necessity for comprehensive cybersecurity measures has become increasingly urgent due to the growing dependence on digital platforms for banking, governance, and communication. This article delves into the cybersecurity landscape of India, including its challenges, initiatives, and future strategies.
India's Present Cybersecurity Environment
The digital ecosystem of India is experiencing rapid growth due to the extensive adoption of digital services, mobile device usage, and internet penetration. Nevertheless, this expansion has rendered the nation a primary target for cyber-attacks. Ina single year, the India Cyber Threat Report 2025 disclosed 369 million malware detections across 8.44 million endpoints. Trojans were the most frequently detected malware, with 140.48 million detections. Android devices, which dominate India’s smartphone market, are particularly susceptible to malware; malware accounted for 42% of all intrusions that targeted these devices. Cyber-attacks on supply chains are also on the rise, with critical sectors such as banking, finance, telecom, and IT being frequent targets.
Significant Cybersecurity Obstacles
India faces numerous obstacles when establishing a secure digital environment. The sophistication of cyber threats is a significant concern. Ransomware attacks, al-driven cybercrimes such as deepfakes, and Advanced Persistent Threats (APTs) are on the increase. Only 14.56% of adaptive behaviour-based methods detected advanced attacks, demonstrating the inadequacy of traditional signaturebased detection methods against evolving threats.
