A remarkable image of a ball of bees A has won top prize in the prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. The photo was captured by US photographer Karine Aigner on a ranch in Texas, and shows a group of male cactus bees competing to mate with a female at the centre of the melee.
Commenting on the image, chair of the jury, Rosamund Kidman Cox OBE said: "The sense of movement and intensity is shown at bee-level magnification, and transforms what are little cactus bees into big competitors for a single female." Aigner says that shortly after she captured the photo, a single triumphant male bee and the female flew away to mate.
