Meet the 'tradwife' influencers who glamorize women's domesticity
SARAH LAING
Home is where the regressive content is

The irony is that the women behind these "tradwife" accounts, apparently embracing home and hearth, are making careers of their seeming rejection of the capitalist machine.

In a certain corner of TikTok, a particular sort of womanhood is on full, feminine display. She bakes fresh bread daily in a perpetually sunny kitchen whose stove costs more than a used car, as a quiver of charmingly dressed children resembling baby pioneers clusters around her. This is known as “tradwife,” or traditional wife content, and its influence is extending well beyond the homestead.

Videos tagged #tradwife have been viewed over 300 million times on TikTok, while on Instagram over 73,000 posts are tagged with the hashtag, along with #tradwifelife and #tradwifeintraining. Some of these are likely critiques of the real thing, often tagged with #homemaker, which has a staggering 787,000 posts on Instagram alone.

Last week, the domestic-centred lifestyle epitomized by this content jumped from social media into the headlines, courtesy of a speech Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave to grads at the Catholic Benedictine College that was so regressive in its gender ideology that even an order of nuns affiliated with the school denounced it.
