We borrowed a tent one of those first summers and then bought our own heavy canvas behemoth the summer after. Some summers, my father, a plumber, exchanged his skills for free family stays at cottag es and lakeside resorts; as he worked all day on back-breaking jobs, we enjoyed Ontario's lakes and woodlands.
