Prior to this, the peak power demand of 6,943 MW was clocked on May 19, the highest ever for the month till then.
In 2018, Delhi had breached the 7,000 MW mark for the first time when peak power demand reached 7,016 MW on July 10. The following year, 7,409 MW was recorded on July 2, 2019, the highest ever recorded in the history of the city. In 2020, power demand did not cross the 7,000 MW mark and peaked at 6,314 MW. In 2021, it clocked 7,323 MW on July 2.
Officials said this year's peak power demand is expected to breach the 8,000 MW mark and even climb up to 8,200 MW, which would be an increase of around 285% over the 2,879 MW recorded in 2002.
