New Delhi: Observing that it violates the fundamental right to life if citizens are forced to live under the atmosphere of communal tension and it is the right of people to seek compensation from the government for any loss due to communal violence, the Supreme Court on Friday passed a slew of directions to ensure that families affected in 1992-93 Mumbai riots are compensated. It set up a committee to trace those not given compensation, including families of 108 missing persons who have not been granted relief so far as they could not be traced.
A bench of Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul, Abhay S Oka and Vikram Nath said it is the failure of state authorities not to control violence and the government had to compensate for the loss of life and property.
