The authorities are considering building a massive underground cavern facility in Gali Batu, near Mandai and close to a disused granite quarry, to store construction material and free up land above ground for other uses.
JTC Corporation is engaging consultancy services for a “high-level, conceptual study” to assess the feasibility of using underground caverns in Gali Batu to store aggregate – a coarse raw material made up of sand and stone, among other things, that is used in construction processes such as making cement.
Situated in an area bounded by Woodlands and Mandai roads, as well as the Kranji and Bukit Timah expressways, the potential cavern could yield about 7.3 million cubic m of storage space based on previous studies at the site, JTC told The Straits Times.
In comparison, Jurong Island's 150m-deep rock caverns can store up to 1.47 million cubic m of liquid hydrocarbons such as crude oil, saving about 60ha of usable land above ground - equivalent in size to about 84 football fields.
Construction aggregate is currently stored in areas such as Tuas and Pulau Punggol Timor.
